The History of Chad

I just want to preface this by saying I know it is absurd that I have a period labelled as just “pre-colonial history”. But history has been whitewashed by Europeans. I will investigate further and extend the history of Chad and many other countries.

Pre-Colonial History ( – 1800)

Nok culture was an early culture in Chad and primarily Nigeria that existed till 500
Sao civilisation were a people around Lake Chad that built fortified structures and engaged in neighbouring trade. They lasted until 1600
The Kanem Empire emerged from around Lake Chad around 800, they established the Saidawa dynasty
The Sifawa dynasty became a significant power and controlled trade routes across the Sahara, dealing with slaves, gold and Ivory
Islam became the Sifawa’s dominant religion by the 13th century
The Kanem Empire began to fall around the 14th century as the Bornu Empire grew, controlling many areas of Chad until the 19th century
The Trans-Saharan trade began to grow as Islam spread

Colonial Era (1800 – 1960)

French explorers and missionaries began to penetrate the region in the 1800s, it became part of French Equatorial Africa, despite local resistance

Modern Day (1960 – )

Since gaining independence in 1960, Chad has faced civil war and political strife
