Early History (0 -1540)

Early agricultural societis cultivated quinoe, maize and potatoes in northern regions
Atacam Desert supported small communities, who used irrigation systems and engaged in trade
Mapuche people setlted in central and southern Chile in 500s
Diahuita people flourishe din North
Aymara people lived as an agricultural people in the Andes around 700s
Tiwanaku Empire influences Aumaras
Inca Empire expanded into northern Chile in 15th centrury, absorbing Aymara and Diaguita people
Inca introduced roads and tried to campaign in South but Mapuche people resisted
Spanish conquistador Diego de Almagro explored Chile in 1536, but was met with Mapuche resistance
Spanish keep trying to enter the area

European Conquest and Colonisation (1540 – 1810)

Pedro de Valdivia founded Santiago, starting Spanish colonisation
Mapuche leader Lautaro defeats and kills Valdivia in the battle of Tucapel
Spanish establish fortified cities between 1603-1612.
Mapache and Spanish fought during Arauco War
The Boubon Reforms integrate Chile into Spanish Empire’s trade network

Modern Chile (1810 – )

Chile gains full independence after Battle of Maipu 1818
Chile wins War of Pacific against Bolivia and Peru
Military coup overthrows government 1973
