Han Dynasty (– AD 220)

The Han Dynasty is founded by Liu Bang, who becomes Emperor Gaozu
Confucianism is established as the state philosophy
The Yellow Turban Rebellion and other peasant uprisings weaken the central authority in 184 leading to the dynasties fall in 220

Six Dynasties (220 – 589)

The Three Kingdoms period begins with the fragmentation of the Han Dynasty into three rival states: Wei, Shu, and Wu in 220
The Jin Dynasty reunifies China by defeating the Eastern Wu state in 280
The Jin Dynasty falls to invasions by the Xiongnu and other northern nomadic tribes, leading to the establishment of the Eastern Jin Dynasty in the south in 316
The Southern Dynasties period consists of the Liu Song, Southern Qi, Liang, and Chen dynasties, each ruling in the south while various northern states control the north between 420 and 589
The Sui Dynasty reunifies China by conquering the Chen Dynasty in 589

Mid-imperial China (589-960)

The Sui Dynasty collapses and is succeeded by the Tang Dynasty in 618
The An Lushan Rebellion (755-763) severely disrupts the Tang Dynasty, it is suppressed but weakens the Dynasty.
The Tang Dynasty officially ends as the last Tang emperor is deposed in 907. The Kingdom is fragmented
The Song Dynasty is founded by Zhao Kuangyin in 960 and reunifies China

Late Imperial China (960-1912)

The Jin Dynasty invades and conquers the northern part of China in 1127
The Yuan Dynasty is founded by Kublai Khan after the Mongol conquests in 1271
The Song Dynasty is defeated by the Mongols at the Battle of Yamen in 1279
1368 The Ming Dynasty is founded by Zhu Yuanzhang (Emperor Hongwu)
Admiral Zheng He led voyages from 1405-1433 to extend Ming’s influence across the Indian Ocean, reaching East Africa.
The Portuguese establish a trading post in Macao in 1557
1614-1644 The Manchu-led Qing Dynasty grows power in Northern China until it defeats the Ming Dynasty and establishes control over the country
The Treaty of Nerchinsk is signed between the Qing Dynasty and Tsarist Russia in 1689
Lord Macartney’s Mission to China is conducted by the British to negotiate trade and diplomatic relations in 1793
The First Opium War occurs from 1839 to 1842 between China and Britain, resulting in a British victory and the signing of the Treaty of Nanking
