The History of Germany

Ancient and Early Medieval (0-500)

Germanic Tribes lived across the region. There was constant battling between them and the Romans
Romans take over Western Germania, there is pressure from the Germanic Tribes as they try to take back the Roman owned regions
Large Germanic tribes emerged and then began to flee south to escape the Huns (circa 370)
Germanic Tribes sacked Rome (476) led by Barbarian Odoacer

Merovingian Kingdom (500-751)

By 500 Clovis I had united all the Frankish Tribes and the Merovingian Kingdom began
In 511 Clovis I died and his sons split Gaul into seperate parts
The Merovingians expanded their Empire, ruling over the Germanic Tribes, converting them to Christianity
The Merovingians placed various regions of their Frankish Empire under Dukes

Carolingian Empire (751-843)

Pippin III, who was Mayor of the palace under the Merovingian Kingdom, but he took over as King and formed the Carolingian Empire

Rise of the Ottonians (843-962)

Carolingian Empire was partitioned into three parts by the Treaty of Verdun (843). Otto was crowned King of East Francia in 936. Outside threats were contained, the Hungarian Magyars were defeated in 955

Holy Roman Empire (962-1806)

Otto I was subsequently crowned King of Italy in 1001 and the Empreror of Rome in 1002
Otto took the power from the Nobles to ellect Bishops and Abbots. He appointed missionaries in the border lands
Henry III ruled from 1039-1056. The Empire supported the Cluniac Reforms of church. Which meant the traditional Monastic life being followed.
Frederick I sought to expand the Holy Roman Empire in the 12th Century
During the 14th and 15th Centuries, the Black Death and Hundred Years War, weakened the empires stability
The Hasburg Dynasty rose to power through strategical marriages and political manouvering in the late 15th and early 16th Century
The Protestant Revival in the 16th Century led to religious upheaval and the 30 year war led to more instability
The Empire’s power began to fall in the 18th Century as it faced wars with France

Metternich (1815-1871)

The Congress of Vienna established the German Confederation in place of the Holy Roman Empire

The German Empire (1871-1918)

The German Empire was created in 1871 after 3 successful wars against Prussia. The Germans began WWI in 1914 and were defeated by allied forces in 1918.

Facism and WWII (1919-1945)

In the wake of the First World War, Adolf Hitler rose to power promoting fascism and imperialism. Eventually WWII broke out in 1939 and was fought until the defeat of the Axis Powers in 1945.

Modern Germany (1945-)

Germany was an founding member of the European Union. In 1989 the Berlin wall fell and East Germany was released from communism. Germany now is an international leader in engineering and technology.+
