Copied ideas from Chinese leadership created ritsuryō state
Nara Period (710-794)
moved more towards Buddhism to counter natural disasters and small pox epedemic
Heian period (794–1185)
Between 812 and 814 smallpox killed almost half the population
Mainly run by Fujiwara clan after Fujiwara no Yoshifusa declared himself regent to the underage Emperor
Central government declined and outer regions began to govern themselves
In 1051 Minamoto clan engaged Abe clan in war and defeated them after 9 years
Fujiwara no Kiyohira took full power after another 3 year war
In 1156 Emperor Go-Shirakawa and Emperor Sutoku employed the Taira and Minamoto clans to war against each other. The Taira clan winning and it’s keader Kiyomori claiming the countries rule
In 1180 Minamoto clan led an uprising against Taira clan. Winning in 1185
Kamakura Period (1185-1333)
Minamoto no Yoritomo became the first Shogun, implementing the shogun system
Rise of the Samurai class. Expulsion of two Mongol invasions in 1274 and 1281
Muromachi period (1333–1568)
Takauji rebelled after Go-Daigo refused to appoint him shōgun. In 1338, Takauji captured Kyoto and installed a rival member on the throne, Emperor Kōmyō, who appointed him shogun
The Ōnin War (1467-1477) was a civil war sparked by a succession dispute it ended the central shogunate authority
The Warring States (1477- ) fragmented clans warred over power
Azuchi–Momoyama period (1568-1600)
Japan was unified under the leadership of Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyosh
Edo period (1600–1868)
The end of the Warring States (1615)
Tokugawa shogunate ruled with general peace and stability
In 1853, American ships landed and with no answer for the guns and cannons aboard, Japan had to allow them to acqire provisions and trade at Japenese ports
Period ended in 1868 as the shogunate began to collapse due to not being able to cope with famine in the common people
Meiji period (1868–1912)
The Emperor was restored to full power and Japan began to be westernised
Taishō period (1912–1926)
Japan grew as a global power and fought in WWI, gaining colonies in the South Pacific
Shōwa period (1926–1989)
Rise in extreme nationalism, Japan was an axis power in WWII. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed, and Japan was occupied by the US until 1952
