Romans and Early Middle Ages ( – 800)

Roman Empire conquered in 15BCE
Bexame a Roman province
Cities such as Aventicum and Augusta Raurica flourished
Fall of the Roman Empire saw the invasion of Germanic tribes in the 5th century
Alemanni tribe in the north, Burgundians in the West
Under Charlemagne the area was integrated into the Carolingian Empire through the 8th and 9th centuries

Middle Ages (800 -1291)

Part of the Frankish Empire
Locals and cities started to gain autonamy
As the Holy Roman Empire weekend, local rule increased
Alliances grew between factions (cantons)

Old Swiss Confederacy (1291 – 1798)

In 1291 Cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden formed a defensive alliance (The Swiss Confederation)
The confederation expanded, Habsurg forces were defeated in the Battle of Morgarten (1315 and the Battle of Sempach (1386)
Divide between Protestant and Catholics and religious wars (Wars of Kappel 1529 & 1531) led to the nation becoming decentralised
During the Thirty Years War (1618-1648), Switzerland remained neutral and emerged with it’s full independence

Napoleonic Era (1798-1815)

Invaded by France and ran as the Helvetic Republic under French control, some self-rule was restored in 1803

Restoration and Modern era (1815 – )

Given independance from France in 1815 at the Congress of Bienna
Sonderbund War (1847) between Catholics and Protestants, Protestants the victors
Universal ale suffrage recognised in 1848 in the Federal Constitution
Remained neutral through both world wars
